There are many experiences we all want to add to our bucket list. Someday. Sometime. But one to actually tick off is the life changing opportunity to swim with the world’s largest fish, the whale shark.
These usually solitary animals gather in plankton-rich tropical waters around the world in extraordinary spots such as Ningaloo Reef in Western Australia, Tofo Beach in Mozambique, Thailand, the Maldives and of course Mexico’s Sea of Cortez.
Whale sharks can reach up to 18 metres in length, but most commonly average 12 metres. Most often they swim close to the surface but can also dive to depths greater than 1000 metres.
Baja Airventures offer the experience of a lifetime witnessing the migrating whale sharks in the late summer and early fall when water temperatures reach 80-82F in the nutrient rich waters off the coast of Baja. These six-day excursions run from August through to the end of October and also offer fishing, hiking, and bird watching.
Your trip starts in San Diego where you are flown to the tiny and remote Mexican fishing village of Bahia de los Angeles. In just an hour by boat lies your home base – the eco-friendly and relaxing Las Animas Wilderness Lodge. Situated on a secluded mile-long sandy cove, you are surrounded by all you need for adventure and pure relaxation.
The six-day full immersion (no pun intended) offers the chance to swim, snorkel and marvel at these gentle giants for up to five hours per day. Afternoons usually revolve around trips to isolated islands and coves to observe whales, dolphins, sea lions, sea turtles and manta rays. Evenings mean sharing beach campfires, ranchero style meals, drinks and tranquil moments.
Accommodation is in 7 romantic, private yurts sitting beach side each with bathroom; solar shower, composting toilets and Queen or King beds with luxurious linen. You can view a few million stars from your covered deck or lie back in bed and see the incredible clear night sky twinkle from the skylight roofs.
The all-inclusive programs include return flights from San Diego, accommodation, all meals, beverages, expert guides, and equipment and both land and boat transportation. http://www.bajaairventures.com/
