The name Alva has roots in Hebrew and Old Norse, but in Gaelic it means white or bright. For the trivia buffs, it is also Thomas Edison’s middle name. Fittingly, he gave us the incandescent bulb. The luminous Alva Hotel in The Valley certainly celebrates all things light.
The former Hotel X is part of IHG Hotels and Resorts’ Vignette Collection. Each hotel in the portfolio is different while maintaining the corporate line – offering a more authentic way to travel.
The location
Location is everything in both real estate and hotels. The Alva is right in the sweet spot between James Street’s retail glamour, The Valley’s music hot spots and Howard Smith Wharves dining and drinking precinct. The location makes it perfect for first-timers and those who already know their way around the River City.
While the Alva Hotel’s bright white exterior is dynamic by day, after dark it shifts it up a notch or two. Every hour on the hour from 6 pm, a five-minute light display washes across the facade. It’s the Valley’s own light show. Not subtle. But then, has anything ever been subtle about the surrounding neighbourhood?

The changes are evident the moment you enter. The formerly bright white ground floor is now subdued and elegant. The glossy onyx and metallic edges of the Hotel X era have given way to a more welcoming space containing both a low-key reception and the ‘Alva at Home’ lobby shop. Local artists’ works give the space a particular warmth.
The rooms and suites
Upstairs, the 146 rooms and suites continue the new identity with confidence. Our rooms’ contemporary design flashes with violet accents in the carpeting and predominantly monotone furniture.
New, more conventional artwork replaces the sometimes confronting Hotel X pieces.

The real punctuation, though, is in the bathrooms. A smart black-and-white checkerboard motif in mosaic tile runs behind the vanity and along the walls, framed by an oversized mirror edged in black that throws light back at itself. Deep grey floor tiles keep the mood grounded.

The Alva Sleep Edit
The Alva Sleep Edit is where press release promises meet actual bedside tables: a pillow menu that extends beyond the standard feather-or-foam selection, along with bedside sleep sprays. Premium Grown Alchemist amenities add refined fragrance to the bathroom and you. Select room categories feature private balconies above the Valley, with enough space for morning coffee courtesy of the in-room Nespresso machine. In addition, dog-friendly floors are designed for those who travel with their four-legged companions.
Sounds of Alva
Two signature suites push the Valley’s music heritage further through the Sounds of Alva programme. Turntables and a handpicked vinyl collection celebrate homegrown Brisbane talent. In a nod to the building’s own history – Hotel X opened in 2021 with design inspired by vinyl records and musical instruments – but also to the Valley itself, which maintains its renowned live-music tradition.
The Front Row Edit
In-room digital recommendations point guests toward local gig guides and live music listings. Curated city guides by the hotel team and local personalities list neighbourhood cafes, bars, galleries and boutiques that change as fast as the Valley’s mood.
Flyers have suggestions for taking on the role of Urban Explorer (complete with a map) and urge guests to ‘collect stories, not souvenirs’. Guests should take in the creativity of nearby galleries and street art, to dining at Agnes – one of Australia’s most-awarded restaurants.

Above it all, the 15-metre rooftop pool has been refreshed. Panoramic city views compete for your attention, along with pool-side cabanas with loungers for afternoon shade. The adjacent Iris Rooftop Bar & Restaurant operated by the Ghanem Group remains a standout dining destination. Spanish-inspired plates and sunset cocktails are hard to beat with a side of urban skyline. Don’t miss the Adobo-spiced lamb shoulder, the Patatas Bravas and the downright ethereal Basque cheesecake-filled doughnuts.

Post a Moment, Post a Memory
One of the more surprising touches is the Post a Moment, Post a Memory ritual. In the lobby, guests can find complimentary postcards. You write them, and the hotel posts them. It’s a delightfully analogue touch in a world of Instagram Stories and disappearing content. General Manager Daniel Gerritse told me it is one of his favourite details.

The property has also partnered with The Hotel School Australia, part of Vignette Collection’s A Means For Good initiative. The partnership roots the hotel in the community.
Alongside the leisure offering, a fully equipped 24-hour fitness centre and a dedicated co-working space are both within the building. Flexible event spaces, including the terrace over Brunswick Street, handle everything from intimate gatherings to corporate retreats.
The Alva is not merely a rebrand. The energy is still there, but now with a little more restraint. For a hotel whose name means light, it knows exactly when to dim the switch. And when to turn it up.
