It was the 80’s. When the Hilton Brisbane opened it was the place to be seen with a long list of luminaries from visiting movie stars to politicians and billionaires calling it home and hosting extravagant parties. Located in the middle of the city still makes it one of Brisbane’s best addresses.
The Austrian-born starchitect Harry Seidler designed the Brisbane Hilton. He was world-renowned for his devotion to Modernism and was one of first proponents of the Bauhaus School in Australia. He won the Sulman Award in 1951 for his first work Rose Seidler house and became a cause celebre with his Australia Square Tower when it opened in 1967.
Seidler stamped his brand of Modernism across Australia with designs such as the controversial Blues Point Tower in Sydney and Perth’s QV1 Office Tower and Shell Headquarters in Melbourne.
Opened in 1986, the Hilton’s distinctive curved design turned heads. The largest atrium in Australia (83 metres high) provides a spectacular sense of space, grandeur and peace. The majestic and timeless interiors are complemented by artwork sketched by the legendary architect.
In 2014, local artist Simon DeGroot was commissioned to recreate some of these Matisse inspired sketches in a massive 18 square metre artwork above Vintaged Bar. The adapted design is an appropriation from a copy of a photocopy sourced from the office of Harry Seidler. Works of art constantly inspired Seidler and he displayed a need to create beautiful spaces to enrich everyday Australian’s environment.
